THE ORGANIZATION

The Haiti Micah Project is a nonprofit Christian organization committed to addressing the needs of impoverished and uneducated children in Haiti. The mission is to assist the street children of Mirebalais in meeting their most basic needs, by providing food, clean water, health care, education, vocational training and emotional well being. Our goal is to reach out to needy children and provide them with the proper care, guidance, education and skills that they need so that they will play an important role in improving their conditions and the conditions of this poverty-stricken country.   Learn more about the project and what we are doing.

STATEMENT OF BELIEFS / HOW WE GOT OUR NAME

The HMP believes that our Christian faith calls us to seek justice for the weak and the vulnerable, maintain the rights of the destitute, and serve the needy.

In the Hebrew Scriptures, the prophet Micah asked this important question, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Indeed, the Lord has shown us what is good. The same faithfulness that binds God’s people into a covenant relationship with God must bind God’s people to another.

As the Haiti Micah Project, we are called to carry out this vision. We believe that every child has a right to clothing, shelter, nutritious meals, medical care, an education and to laughter. We believe that as stewards of God’s creation, we have received many blessings. Therefore, we are called to give of our time, talent and money to help others in need.

Through this project, we feel that we have a MICAH call – A Mission to Invest in Children and Adolescents in Haiti.

LEADERSHIP

Founder and President: The Rev. Joseph M. Constant
The Haiti Micah Project was founded by the Rev. Joseph M. Constant in 2005. As a Haitian-American living in the Diaspora, Father Constant's heart grieves over the deplorable conditions under which too many Haitian children are forced to live. Rev. Constant feels called to find creative ways to help alleviate the despair of some of Haiti's children. Rev. Constant started the HMP in response to the growing numbers of abandoned children in Haiti and the inability of mothers and fathers to respond to the most basic needs of their children. The children of Haiti are crying for people of good will to come to their rescue.

A native of Haiti and now a U.S. Citizen, Rev. Constant obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He worked as an Electrical Engineer before accepting the call to serve the Episcopal Church in the ordained ministry. Rev. Constant obtained his Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia and was ordained to the priesthood in Washington, DC. He has served as the Assistant Rector at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC and is currently serving as the Director of Ethnic Ministries at Virginia Theological Seminary.

“I have become convinced that Haitians living outside of Haiti must play a major role in helping our brothers and sisters back home rise above extreme poverty. We must find creative ways to use our gifts and talents and resources to support in the development effort. The gospel calls us to extend the hand of love and compassion to a brother or sister in need. We must extend such a hand to each Haitian in need, one at a time.”       - Rev. Constant
