The Haiti Micah Project

History

Haiti Micah Project (HMP) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation established to support mission activities in Haiti, including the development of services and programs to serve Haiti’s impoverished children. HMP began in response to the challenges identified by the community leaders in Mirebalais, Haiti, a city located in the central plateau of Haiti. In October 2006, the Haiti Micah Project and our local partner in Mirebalais, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church began engaging the concrete needs of the streets and at-risk children. The project in Mirebalais is registered with the Haitian government under the name Solidarite et Action pour Les Enfants de Sion or Solidarity and Action for The Children of Zion. This program serves a population of children and young people that are living in extreme poverty.

The SAES Home - In 2009, HMP opened a 24-bed residence that serves orphaned and at-risk children in Haiti. Many of the children came to the house from the Azile Communale in Mirebalais. The Azile Communale is an overcrowded open air structure occupied by the poorest of the poor in Mirebalais. The children living in the SAES home receive 24 hour care by a staff of six adults including an English tutor. The children all attend St. Peter’s Episcopal School and are flourishing at St. Peter’s. As of September 2010, the SAES Home houses 21 orphaned and at-risk children.  The children are thriving in their new environment and responding well to the loving care of the staff.  Many have significantly improved their academic rewards and are at the top of their classes.

The Feeding/Education Program – Since the earthquake, the number of children in the feeding program has more than doubled, growing to more than 400. The Feeding/Education Program provides a hot meal, tuition stipends, uniforms and basic health care to more than 400 children. The children we are working with need more than just a hot meal. They need spiritual formation, decent shelter, education, clean drinking water, medical care, clothes and everything a child needs to function. As a new school year approaches, we are preparing to offer access to education to as many children as we can. For many families, even the entrance fee can prevent them from sending a child to school. In addition to the entrance fee, they have to purchase uniforms, shoes and school supplies. The HMP attempts to meet the needs of as many children as possible.

What Can We Do?

In responding to the devastation of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Haiti Micah Project (HMP) doubled its monthly financial support for the feeding/education program. We continue to solicit funds for aid in expanding and strengthening the program to be able to serve more children, with a focus on those who have been orphaned or devastated by the earthquake. 100% of your donations will be used to provide needed care for the children of HMP.

For $25 a month, we can provide food, clothes and tuition for a child. Over the last four years, we have served over 400,000 meals to HMP children and insured they were enrolled in school, paying for their tuition, uniforms and school supplies. Our program is located in the central plateau town of Mirebalais, which is about 25 miles north of Port-au-Prince. Every day, we are seeing more and more refugees from Port-au-Prince. We have the structure to insure the children in Mirebalais can have access to food, clothes, health care, shelter and education.

This project has been a blessing to these children. Through our Sponsor a Child program, we invite individuals, Churches and schools to partner with a child directly. While the challenges facing Haiti could feel overwhelming at times, we take comfort knowing that we help one child or one young person at a time. We encourage our supporters and partners to visit Haiti and to witness firsthand how their on-going prayers and financial donations are giving life to these children.

Meet Lovelie Delanot - The Story of a Haitian Girl as told by Rev. Joseph Constant

In 2006, I visited Haiti and met a shy 4 year old Lovelie Delanot. Lovelie and her brothers were among the children belonging to feeding program of the Haiti Micah Project. As I visited the feeding program, Lovelie was very sick with a high fever and constant cough. After the children ate, I took Lovelie and her two brothers to the clinic. The doctor prescribed medication and I walked five miles up the hills to Lovelie’s house. What I saw as Lovelie’s house brought tears to my eyes. Lovelie lives in a shack made of sticks and mud. Lovelie’s little body was decaying and screaming for nutrition. Her parents had no ability to care for her, and basically Lovelie was abandoned to the streets, in the hopes of finding food. She like so many young children was at risk of becoming a restavek (child enslavement) or being sexually abused.

Almost 4 years later, Lovelie is now in residence at the HMP/SAES home. She receives 24 hour care with three meals a day. Lovelie will forever have the scars of her childhood, but Lovelie’s needs are being directly addressed. She has hope and a chance for life. Lovelie’s future, like so many of these children, depends upon our support.
